Purebred beef Shorthorns have made Green Spring Farm their home for 42 years. From the beginning, Dr. Ediger's goal has been to produce that ideal beef animal that would efficiently conver grass to beef to the highest quality. As a veterinarian whose job took him away from the farm for a considerable time, those animals needed to be able to take care of themselves, be fertile, easy calving and able to wean a heavy calf. The herd began with one female and through strict culling, line breeding and use of a scale to monitor performance, the results are a herd of high performing, deep bodied cows with excellent udders, feet and legs and animals excelling in rate of gain. Likewise the bulls used in the herd by both AI and natural breeding, were selected on performance traits. Since many animals are sold each year to youngsters in 4-H and other youth programs, disposition has been a very important selection trait as well. These animals have won numerous shows, rate of gain and carcass contests for their owners. In November 2009, all the mature cows were sold at public sale. It was a fantastic sale and we truly appreciate each and every buyer. Progressive Shorthorn breeders recognized the unique genetics offered in the herd with the animals purchased by 53 buyers from 13 different states. A number of the cows are now in donor line-ups and we wish all the new owners great success. Dr. Ediger retained some yearling and embryo calves.
